“DBL Sizzler” … Dane Laboyrie has been so impressed with his David Temby hand assembled trumpet #2016/2 that he decided that he wanted a second horn to be his dedicated “sizzler” for lead playing and some commercial work.
Dane and I had spent a lot of time together before, during and after the build of his first Temby horn. This helped us to both understand how to best proceed with the challenge of assembling a new horn that would have very similar “blow” characteristics of his first horn, but would have a brighter overall sound, and even more focus across the range. It was important to have an easy transition from playing one horn to the other. Dane also wanted a totally silver plated horn to distinguish between his two horns. We were both confident that plating would also “light-up” the sound a little.
The raw yellow brass, “725L” early taper with a 5″ diameter bell was then selected from a large number of similar bells, for its response and overtone structure. Similar to his other horn, we altered the graduation of the thickness of the brass around areas of the bell flare, and then in addition, around the bell crook. Although we were both pretty sure that we were on the right track, it wouldn’t be until I finished the engraving, had the bell silver plated and assembled the horn that we would know if the result was exactly what Dane was searching for.
After a few months of playing his new horn, we are both very happy to say that the “DBL Sizzler” is everything that Dane wanted as his “Signature” Temby horn.
